Vibe and character

Anjos and Intendente have a gritty-authentic feel that most tourist-facing Lisbon neighbourhoods have lost. Praça do Intendente — the central square — was renovated a decade ago and is now a pleasant local hub with affordable restaurants, a craft beer bar, and a mix of old Lisbon residents and a newer international crowd. It's the kind of neighbourhood where you find a local tascas serving lunch for €8 two doors down from a quality coffee shop.

The area has strong Portuguese community identity — less expat-bubble than parts of Chiado — which makes it a more interesting place to live over several months. It's roughly 15 minutes on foot from Baixa and 10 from Mouraria/Alfama.

Transit and getting around

Anjos station is on the Green line, connecting directly to Baixa-Chiado (2 stops south) and Intendente. The broader area is also served by multiple bus routes. Walking to Mouraria takes about 10 minutes; Rossio/Baixa takes 15–20.

The €40 monthly Navegante pass covers unlimited metro and bus travel across Lisbon. The area is hilly in parts, so expect some inclines on foot, but nothing like Alfama or Mouraria's steeper streets.

Anjos is a strong choice for nomads on a tighter budget who still want to be genuinely in Lisbon — not in the suburbs. It also suits people who want local café/restaurant culture over tourist infrastructure. If you've done a Baixa or Chiado stay before and want to experience a more neighbourhood-feeling part of the city, Anjos is a natural next choice.
