Vibe and character

Ajuda and Belém together form the most heritage-dense part of Lisbon — this is where the Age of Discovery left its largest marks. The riverside stretch in Belém has the Torre de Belém, the Padrão dos Descobrimentos, Jerónimos Monastery, and the original Pastéis de Belém café (est. 1837), all within a 15-minute riverside walk.

Day-to-day the area feels genuinely residential: local cafés, a covered market, good supermarkets, and a riverside park that's worth using as a daily running or working route. The tourist presence is concentrated at the Belém monuments and mostly clears by evening.

Transit and getting around

Belém and Ajuda are served by the 15E electric tram (Praça da Figueira to Algés), which runs along the riverfront and is one of the most scenic commutes in Lisbon. The journey to Cais do Sodré (for Chiado/Bairro Alto) or Praça do Comércio in Baixa takes about 25–30 minutes by tram. Buses also connect to Cascais and Estoril along the coast.
